A maximum of 6 units of graduate credit obtained at accredited institutions other than Washington University may be applied toward a master's degree. A maximum of 48 units of graduate credit earned at institutions other than Washington University may be applied toward the Doctor of Science degree.
Units transferred to the School must be units that normally would be counted toward the School’s graduate degree program. Independent study courses taken at another institution will not be accepted as transfer units toward a graduate degree from the School unless the previous institution’s registrar submits a letter detailing the content of the independent study course and relating it to a graduate course not offered during the semester the independent study course was taken at that institution. Research units taken at another institution can not be transferred into a master’s degree program offered by the School. Students pursuing a Doctor of Science degree program offered by the School may transfer research units to the School if it is research they are continuing at the School and it is approved by the department chair. Students who have completed thesis option master’s degrees at other institutions may transfer a maximum of 30 units to the School. These units will be counted as transfer coursework by the School, provided the work completed for the master’s degrees are acceptable toward the School’s graduate degree program.
Transfer credit must be recommended by the department chair or program director and approved by the Engineering Registrar. No graduate courses carrying grades lower than B can be accepted as transfer credit toward any graduate degree. Coursework completed more than seven years prior to admission to a Washington University graduate program is generally not considered to meet contemporary standards and is typically not accepted, unless formal approval is granted by the engineering school's Graduate Board. Grades of accepted transfer courses do not transfer to Washington University.
Approved transfer credit for undergraduate coursework completed at a different institution is not accepted unless a letter is received from that institution's registrar. The letter should state that the coursework was not used to satisfy undergraduate degree requirements at that institution, and that the coursework would normally be counted toward graduate degree requirements at that institution.
