Grading

Graduate work is graded on a scale of A, B, C, D, P (Pass), and F (Failure), including pluses and minuses. Auxiliary marks are I (incomplete), X (no final examination), and N (no grade turned in). Audit grades are L (audit) and Z (unsuccessful audit). Graduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (A = 4.0). Some graduate degree programs may require their students to have higher minimum cumulative grade point averages in order to graduate with those degrees.

Grades below B are considered unsatisfactory. A grade of I in a course other than research must be removed no later than the close of the next semester. If it is not, the I turns into an F grade at the end of the next regular semester after the I grade was assigned.

A graduate student with a semester or cumulative grade point average below 2.75 is placed on academic probation. A graduate student is eligible for academic suspension if any one of the following occurs: the graduate student receives a grade of F in a course; the graduate student earns a semester grade point average of less than 2.00; or the graduate student becomes eligible for academic probation for a second time and has not attained a cumulative 2.75 grade point average. If a graduate student becomes eligible for academic probation for a second time, and has at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average, then the student is again placed on academic probation.

Names of students eligible for academic suspension are sent to their respective department chairs and program directors, who then decide whether the students should be suspended or placed on special academic probation. Students who are suspended may appeal to the chair of the Graduate Board for reinstatement.
