Graduate Registration

For registration dates for graduate courses in the School of Engineering, consult the University calendar or the current University Course Listings book. Dates for late registration are listed in the University Course Listings book. A late charge of $100 will apply for each week after the second week of classes. Registration is not allowed after the third week of classes without the permission of the engineering school's Senior Associate Dean.

All graduate students in the School of Engineering must register each fall and spring semester until all degree requirements are complete. Students may register in one of three categories:

Active: Normally, students register as active until they have earned the total number of units required for the degree.

Inactive: A student who has not completed the course requirements for the degree but who, because of personal or business reasons, must temporarily suspend his or her studies, may register as an inactive student upon the approval of his or her adviser, department chair or program director, and the Engineering Registrar. There is no fee for inactive status. Inactive status is usually allowed for a maximum of one year (two semesters). Students in a master's or doctoral program registering for 599 Master's Research or 690/600 Doctoral Research are not allowed to register as inactive.

Special: A student who has earned the total number of course units required for the degree, but who has not yet completed all of the requirements, may register as a special student. The registration fee for this category is the same as for a one-unit course.

Students who fail to register as described above will have their graduate standing revoked.

A student whose graduate standing has been revoked may apply to the Engineering Registrar for reinstatement. Once the form has been completed and signed by both the student and his or her department chair or program director, it should be submitted to the Engineering Registrar's Office. The Engineering Registrar and the chair of the Graduate Board will review each application for reinstatement. The application fee for reinstatement is $25. Students seeking reinstatement may be required to take a special reinstatement examination and to repeat previous work if it fails to meet contemporary standards. Candidates for the Doctor of Science degree who apply for reinstatement may be required to repeat the qualifying examinations.
