If you earn at least a "C+" in your first Washington University course, you can receive degree credit for the previous course in the required sequences above if you petition the Math Department to receive this credit.
Common Studies
These requirements are in effect for all of the "professional" B.S. degree programs (B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Science and Engineering.)
Calculus
Calculus
Requirement: Completion of a sequence of calculus courses, which includes a course in Ordinary Differential Equations.
- Math 131 Calculus I
- Math 132 Calculus II
- Math 233 Calculus III
- Math 217 Differential Equations

Physics
Requirement: Completion of a two-semester (two-course) sequence in calculus-based physics.
Successful completion of 118A does not result in proficiency credit for 117A; successful completion of 198 does not result in proficiency credit for 197.
Chemistry
Requirement: Chemistry 111A, 112A, and 151
- Physics 117A and 118A
-OR- - Physics 197 and 198
Successful completion of 118A does not result in proficiency credit for 117A; successful completion of 198 does not result in proficiency credit for 197.
Chemistry
Requirement: Chemistry 111A, 112A, and 151
Completion of the 111A-112A-151 sequence satisfies the degree requirements for all of the professional degrees. Successful completion of Chem 112A does not imply proficiency in Chem 111A. Some programs allow completion of the sequence Chemistry 111A-151 to satisfy this requirement. Consult the requirements for your specific program.
Technical writing
Requirement: Completion of EP 310, Technical Writing, or its equivalent.
Humanities/Social Science
