Internships/Co-Op

Students can choose from a host of work experience opportunities in the School of Engineering including summer internships, both in the U.S. and abroad, and co-op opportunities. Students can use an internship or co-op experience to blend theory and practice, develop critical work place skills, and earn a salary.

A number of companies located in St. Louis, such as Boeing, which is located just 15 minutes from Washington University's campus, and St. Jude Medical in St. Paul, Minnesota, actively seek summer interns.

"This summer, my internship at Boeing in St. Louis focused on Global Trade controls. I was able to see the impact of an engineered product (such as an airplane or helicopter) and engineering data in business transactions. This experience has enabled me to see how the commercial thinking is integrally connected with engineering." - Kristy Kramer, Mechanical Engineering

The School of Engineering also offers internships on campus. For example, students from all engineering majors have the opportunity to participate in a paid summer internship that brings together faculty in engineering and neurosurgery to work with students from all disciplines of engineering who are interested in developing new medical devices. This is a rare opportunity for engineering undergraduate students to engage in the creative design process while working on real world problems that lead directly to improved surgical procedures and innovative new devices.
