New Associate Dean / Executive Director of the Sever Institute of Continuing Studies: Errol Sandler
The School of Engineering & Applied Science is pleased to announce Errol Sandler, Ph.D. will be the new Associate Dean / Executive Director of the Sever Institute of Continuing Studies, effective April 18, 2008. The Sever Institute encompasses the School of Engineering & Applied Science's part-time masters programs for working professionals and the Center for the Application of Information Technology (CAIT). Most recently, Dr. Sandler was Vice President for Informatics at Pfizer.
Dr. Sandler's 30-year industrial career has focused on Research and Development computing problems in the Life Sciences. Prior to joining Washington University in January of 2008, Dr. Sandler provided leadership and technical expertise in Research and Development Information Technology in the pharmaceutical industry.
At Pfizer, Dr. Sandler led the teams that provided Information Technology support at several Pfizer Global R & D sites in the U.S. and the U.K. Prior to joining Pfizer, Dr. Sandler led R&D IT overall in Pharmacia Corporation as Vice President, and simultaneously he was overall Site Executive for Pharmacia's operations in the Chicago area.
Before the merger of Monsanto and Pharmacia and UpJohn to form Pharmacia Corporation, Dr. Sandler was the leader of R&D IT in G. D. Searle & Co. starting in November of 1985 and then later in Monsanto/Searle. He joined G. D. Searle and Co. in 1977 as a programmer analyst.
Dr. Sandler received his Ph.D. degree in Physics and Astronomy in July of 1977 from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Since joining Washington University in January of 2008, Dr. Sandler has been creating a new certificate program in clinical informatics and will be teaching the first course in this program during summer 2008. This course - Introduction to BioMedical Informatics - is designed to increase students' understanding of the challenges in life sciences and health care and ways that problems are being addressed using information technology.

New Senior Associate Director of Development: Alexandra Carr
Alexandra (Alex) Carr joined the Engineering Alumni and Development staff as Senior Associate Director of Development, effective Monday, April 21.
Alex comes to Washington University from Equal Justice Works in Washington, DC, where she served as a Regional Director of Development. Prior to her work at Equal Justice Works, Alex served Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Engineering and Public Policy as its Washington, DC Office Director. In this role, Alex built relationships with federal agencies, scientific institutions, congressional representatives, and industry partners for the purpose of promoting Carnegie Mellon engineering teaching and research. Her career has also included service as a Senior Attorney for Global Futures Foundation in DC and as a Research Engineer in private industry in Pittsburgh, PA. Alex has her B.S. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon and JD from the Duke University School of Law.
Alex will play an integral role in helping the School of Engineering achieve its private funding goals.
