AUGUST 2007

Across Disciplines. Across the World.

Dean's Welcome

To all of our returning students, welcome back! To the 230 freshman and 165 new graduate students joining us this fall, welcome to the Washington University School of Engineering! You hail from across the U.S. and the world and it is great to have you as part of our Washington University Engineering community.

New opportunities and courses for students are being created and more are being developed. Professor Frank Yin and a group of students from BME just returned from Hong Kong from our first faculty-led international trip for our undergraduate students. EECE plans to take another group of students to Beijing next summer to focus on monitoring air pollution at Olympic sites. The first group of 17 McKelvey and Luce Undergraduate Research Scholars have arrived. Graduate students are now - for the first time - free to take courses that support or are part of the academic program in A&S, Business, Law, Visual Arts, Social Work, and Medicine.

I also want to extend a warm welcome to the new faculty and staff who have recently joined us for the upcoming year. We welcome Assistant Professors Caitlin Kelleher in Computer Science & Engineering, Cynthia Lo and Young-Shin Jun in Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering, and Professor Younan Xia in Biomedical Engineering. In addition, I am pleased to announce that several former part-time faculty members accepted full-time lecturer positions - Martha Hasting in ESE and Sandra Matteucci and Andrea Heugatter in the Engineering Writing Program.

Lopata Hall renovations will be completed in early September, providing much improved space for undergraduate and graduate student services, student mailboxes, and great new messaging boards for communication.

This summer, we completed the master plan for our new campus, and the architects and engineers have been given the go ahead to design Phase I of the project. Take a minute and see the inspiring elevations of the buildings, which are now up in all of the department offices.

I look forward to working with all of you this year, and I wish you an exciting, rewarding, and enjoyable year.
