In May 2008, Concordia University Irvine honored Melvin Olsen, EE '48, with a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) degree for his faithful service to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Melvin spent 36 years working for IBM in the development of several large computers. He was a member of the Board of Regents of Concordia University Irvine in Irvine, California from 1995 to 2007, which is the longest any member has ever served consecutively.

W. E. Moerner, EN 75, EN 75, LA 75, was chosen to co-receive the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, the highest scientific prize in Israel, for founding a new field of science, optical detection and spectroscopy of single molecules. Moerner is the Harry s. Mosher Professor of Chemistry and professor, by courtesy, of applied physics at Stanford University.

Don Jubel, BSME '73, received the 2008 School of Engineering Volunteer of the Year Award. Don is past president and current member of the School of Engineering's Alumni Advisory Council and a member of the School's National Council.
