Welcome Back from Dean Sutera

To all of our new students and faculty - welcome! To all of our returning students and faculty - welcome back!

With the start of this new academic year, the School of Engineering and Applied Science begins an exciting new era. The School's strategic plan, which was developed over the past two years by faculty, students, alumni, industry partners, staff and many others, will continue to be implemented. Most visibly, construction of the School's next new building will commence this fall.

This summer, I announced some new appointments for our faculty. In Computer Science and Engineering, Professor Gruia-Catalin Roman was reappointed chair and Professor Ron Cytron was appointed associate chair. When Professor Kevin Truman left Washington University to become the Dean of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Computing and Engineering, Professor Philip Bayly was appointed chair of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Structural Engineering. In addition, Professor Joseph O'Sullivan was appointed Dean of the University of Missouri-St. Louis/Washington University Joint Undergraduate Engineering Program.

We are pleased to welcome two new faculty members this academic year - Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Viktor Gruev (Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University), who just completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania; and Assistant Professor of Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering Yinjie Tang (Ph.D. from University of Washington), who just completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California-Berkeley.

As we collectively work to strengthen and enhance both our undergraduate and graduate programs, we hope to highlight School accomplishments through our publications. In addition to monthly e-newsletters, the next edition of our School's magazine, Engineering Momentum, will be available this fall. The upcoming edition will highlight some of our very talented faculty, students, and alumni.

I want to emphasize my commitment to open communication and dialogue with all members of the engineering community. I look forward to working with you as we face the opportunities and challenges ahead together, and invite you to write me at engineeringdean@wustl.edu to share your thoughts and ideas. And, please remember to visit the School's Web site frequently to learn about recent news and upcoming events.

Best wishes to all of you in this new academic year!

Sincerely,

Salvatore P. Sutera
Dean
