Recent Network Issues Message from Bob Guthrie
Over the past week, Engineering IT (EIT) has responded to several incidents where either compromised computers or excessive P2P traffic have flooded the network. This caused a loss of network service for the people in the School of Engineering. In every case, we have been able to identify the computer, block its network traffic and return the School to normal service. All the compromised computers are ones that have been personally purchased and not under EIT support. The excessive P2P traffic (IM, Skype, BitTorrent, etc.) is a violation of the University Computer Use Policy.
Based on the recent experience, EIT is researching ways to proactively prevent this type of problem.
Until a School-wide solution is implemented, we must rely on each individual being personally responsible for their computer and how they use it. I would like to remind everyone that when you connect any device to the Washington University network you have the potential to disrupt service to everyone.
It is extremely important that you make every effort to keep your computer at the current service patch, security patch, anti-virus, and spyware protection levels.
Should your computer become compromised, EIT will have no choice but to prohibit network connectivity until the system has been repaired.
