I knew country life was not for me. I grew up in southern Missouri and had a friend from school who worked at Washington University. She thought it was a great place and encouraged me to apply. The rest, as they say, is history.

Growing up in a rural area offered little opportunity to meet and learn about people from different parts of the world and I feel that has been one of the perks of working at Washington University.

In our department, we've always tried to promote a welcoming and supportive environment. If students would say that my being here played a part in good memories they have and the connection they feel to the Computer Science Department, then that would be a great reward.

Working on a college campus is stimulating. I appreciate the opportunity to interact with interesting people, each of whom has a part to play in making a complex place like Washington University run smoothly. The environment is never stagnant and constantly refreshing itself.

When I arrived here 30 years ago, the Computer Science Department chair, Jerry Cox, set a very high standard for everyone who worked with him. I certainly learned and benefitted from that. I was lucky to start in an environment that has been such a good fit for me.

I think of myself as a chain reader. Reading is my favorite hobby and after five days a week in front of the computer, I'm happy to stay far away from a computer on the weekend.

I had my "15 Minutes of Fame" some years ago when I was featured with one of my favorite recipes in the food section of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
