Seismic Design Team Places No. 8 Overall
Earlier this year, students represented Washington University Engineering at the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's seismic design competition. The event, held in New Orleans, included three phases of competition including oral presentation, poster presentation and simulated testing. Washington University was the only team from the Midwest and took first place for building costs, sixth for income, 14th for seismic cost and had an overall ranking of No. 8.
"Their project was quite multidisciplinary," said team mentor and graduate advisor Waleed Barnawi. "They used structural engineering, construction engineering, time management and economic knowledge to create a unique structure. Part of the goal is to make your project look really nice, but it needs to withstand simulated seismic shifts as well."
Students built their model in the earthquake engineering lab with assistance from several mentors including Professors Shirley Dyke, Kevin Truman and Phillip Gould.
