October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month
The Network Security Office and the School of Medicine Information Security Team would like to share tips with you on how to not fall for Phishing scams.
- Washington University will never send an email signed 'The WUSTL support team' or 'The WUSTL.edu helpdesk' or any variation. An email from Washington University should always include a real person's name and contact info at the bottom.
- Financial institutions, universities and other companies will never send an email asking for personal information like ID numbers, social security numbers, usernames, passwords, etc. These emails are from cybercriminals posing as the institution. Do not reply to these.
- Do not open attachments or click on links in emails from someone you don't know or if you were not expecting it. If it looks sketchy, ask the person before you open the attachment or click on the link.
- If you receive an email from a business or university you were not expecting, do not click on any of the links. Instead, use Google to search for the URL of the real site, and go directly to the website by typing it in your browser.
- Do not reply or try to unsubscribe from these emails.
- Delete phishing emails or forward them to the Network Security Office or Infosec@wusm.wustl.edu. When possible we will report them and have the sites taken down.

Cultural Brown Bag Luncheons
All School of Engineering staff members are invited to short film showings and/or discussions on cultural or artistic topics to be scheduled on the first Wednesday of even numbered months.
In August, we showed the classic comedy "The Idle Class" by Charlie Chaplin, which definitely brought some laughter into the work place. Last month, we viewed "Engineering Student Services Video Surprises" - film footage produced by a few staff members from their "younger days." Chris Kroeger and Tobin Harris revealed their early cinematic prowess.
The purpose is just a chance to see people in a new context, and to get together to share a laugh or two. We will hold these "brown bag" sessions on the 1st Wednesday of each even numbered month, each time trying to include some culturally interesting film, book, topic, or discussion. If you have ideas or suggestions for future "Cultural Brown Bags" please e-mail Tom Evola. Locations for these luncheons will vary, but e-mail reminders will precede each event.
