Chris Kroeger

Associate Dean for Students

On May 21, during University Staff Day celebrations, Chris Kroeger received the 2007 Gloria W. White Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes non-academic staff members for exceptional effort and contribution to the University.

My career background includes 17 years in the School of Engineering. I started in Engineering Career Services, then moved into Engineering Admissions to recruit students, and ultimately moved into the Registrar's office. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with students in three very distinct areas of student services. I have also been a part-time (evening) Dale Carnegie Instructor for the past 10 years, and I was a military officer in the Army Reserves for 13 years.

I earned a Master's degree in industrial/organizational psychology, with all Ph.D. coursework completed. I realized I did not want to do research for a career path, but wanted to work in higher education.

My primary role in the School of Engineering is to help students, faculty and staff with a wide range of issues. No two days are the same. An open, positive and flexible attitude is essential in working effectively with whatever type of situation might walk in the door each day.

My family includes my wife, Becky, and two daughters Miranda and Courtney.

I am inspired by everyone in my work environment. On a daily basis, I am surrounded by sincere people who are highly motivated, engaged, smart, and want to make a difference. All you have to do is open your eyes and connect with that energy.

The Gloria W. White Distinguished Service Award came with a cash prize. The $1000 question is: How did you use your prize? My family and I were at the mall and made the mistake of stopping by the store that sells the sleep number beds. Of course, our daughters instantly wanted one. We were planning to buy them new mattresses soon. The sleep number mattresses have a 20-year warranty, so we bought them each a sleep number mattress. Life at home is always better when the kids are well rested.
