Transfer Course Approval

Please follow the steps below to transfer course credit from another school to Washington University.

Students must earn at least a "C" grade in the course ("B" if for ECOMP 100) for the units to transfer to Washington University. Courses taken "online" are not accepted as transfer credit. Grades do not transfer to Washington University. Students who wish to repeat (retake) courses taken at Washington University for a better grade, must retake those courses at Washington University, and not retake them at a different institution. Repeated courses taken at a different institution will not be accepted as transfer credit.

Please keep in mind that no university is required to accept transfer credit from another institution. As a courtesy to our students, we will accept PRE-APPROVED courses, if students follow the prescribed approval process. The approval process takes several weeks to complete. For summer courses, students should submit all required documents (described below) to the Engineering Student Services’ Office before April 1. The office may not have adequate time to approve summer transfer courses that are submitted for approval after April 1.

After a pre-approved course is completed at another institution, an official transcript from that institution should be sent directly to the Engineering Registrar's Office within four weeks of the course being completed. After an official transcript is received from the other institution, the transfer credit will be posted to the student's Washington University record before the next semester's pre-registration cycle on campus (by October 1 for spring pre-registration).

Students should have official transcript from the other school sent directly to:

Step 1: Check our database to see if the course has already been approved.

View courses from other institutions that have already been approved by reviewing our Outside Course Evaluations Database.
If the course you wish to take is already listed in the database above, there is no other action you need to take to get the course approved. After you complete the course, simply have the official transcript sent to the Engineering Student Services Office.

Step 2: If the course is not listed in the database above, follow the process below to have the course pre-approved:
Review our Guidelines for Approval of Transfer Courses [PDF] which describes how to transfer coursework back to the School of Engineering.

If a student wishes to transfer computer science courses, it is important to review the CSE Transfer Course Evaluation Procedure posted by Professor Sally Goldman in the Computer Science and Engineering Department.

If a student wishes to transfer a course equivalent to English Composition (ECOMP) 100, it is important to review the Transfer Guidelines for ENGLISH COMPOSITION 100 [PDF] which describes how to transfer this coursework.
