Biography
Professor Cunningham joined Washington University in St. Louis in spring 2012. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Machine Learning at the University of Cambridge (UK), in the Department of Engineering with the Computational and Biological Learning Laboratory. At Cambridge, he was also an Engineering Research Fellow with Christ’s College.
Research
Professor Cunningham’s lab is interested in questions about how complicated systems do interesting things. For example, we use our brain in everything that we do, but we understand relatively little about how it works.
How do populations of neurons act together to control complex, sophisticated movement? What new mathematical and computational techniques are required to investigate that, and how else can those methods be applied?
His research involves engineering, computer science, and applied statistics and their application to neural systems. Overall, his research aims to advance understanding of learning and pattern generation in computational and biological systems, which has many applications across biomedicine and engineering.
