A team of 10 mechanical engineering students took part in the first-annual St. Louis Arch Design Competition held in October. The team’s proposal was for a design that would ensure the continued safety of the maintenance staff in repairing the unique tram system while preserving the original design of the 52-year-old national landmark. In the process, the students rode to the top of the Arch on the tram, then walked down the steps of one leg of the Arch to get a better view of the problem they sought to solve. In addition, at a banquet Oct. 28, the team members met several of the men who built the monument.
