WashU Engineering’s ‘smart fertilizer’ finalist for international award

Pratim Biswas, the Lucy & Stanley Lopata Professor, assistant vice chancellor – international programs and chair of the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering, and Ramesh Raliya, research scientist, were recently honored by the Institution of Chemical Engineers as a finalist for the IChemE Biotechology Award for 2017.

The award recognizes the smart fertilizer they developed to revolutionize crop production to meet the world’s increasing demand for food, energy and water. Their fertilizer, called Birano Smart Fertilizer, has a patent pending through their work with the Office of Technology Management. In September, Raliya and Biswas received an award from the university’s Leadership in Entrepreneurial Acceleration Program (LEAP).
