​Advanced Placement

Students in the School of Engineering & Applied Science are given advanced placement in courses based upon the exam scores listed below.


The maximum number of general elective credit units from AP scores that can count toward a Bachelor's degree is 15. No humanities or social sciences credit is awarded for AP results.

*Please be aware that neither Humanities nor Social Sciences credit is available via AP Credit, International Baccalaureate, British A-Level, or WashU Back Credit results.

Chemistry (L07) (Test: CHE)

Receipt of credits has no bearing on fulfillment of chemistry requirements for pre-med or any science major and cannot be used to satisfy prerequisites for Organic Chemistry.

Special Note for Engineering First-Year Students: Students with an AP Chemistry score of 5 may petition the Engineering Student Services Office for "proficiency" credit for Chem 111A, 112A, 151, and 152.

Engineering students who are considering a second major or minor the Chemistry department will not use AP credit for proficiency. All chemistry coursework for a chemistry major or minor must be taken at Washington University.

No credit awarded. Placement in Economics 4021 or in any 300-level class with an Economics 1021 (Econ 104B) prerequisite, so long as the prerequisites (such as calculus) are met. Bypassing introductory courses may be disadvantageous.

3 units of general elective credit for Math 131 (Calculus I). You will be placed into Math 132 (Calculus II).

Students who receive a 4 should enroll in Calculus II. You will receive credit for Calculus I upon successful completion of Calculus II.

No credit awarded. Take the online calculus placement exam. For proper placement, Engineering students should take the Calculus Placement Exam regardless of their score.

Physics majors and students interested in advanced treatment of introductory physics should enroll in Physics 197 in the Fall semester, followed by Physics 198 in the Spring semester. Students may not enroll in Physics 198 without first taking Physics 197.

Physics majors and students interested in an advanced treatment of introductory physics should enroll in Physics 197 in the Fall semester, followed by Physics 198 in the Spring semester.

3 units of general elective credit for Physics 114A. This corresponds to the second semester in a two-semester, algebra-based introductory physics sequence. Students who require calculus-based physics for course or major requirements should enroll in Physics 117A or Physics 197 in the fall semester. Students who plan to major in physics or who have a strong interest in physics are encouraged to enroll in Physics 197.
